What Does the Lord Require?
Last Thursday, Wanda and I celebrated 37 years of marriage. That morning, she told me she loved me. We prayed together. She put the dog in the car. And drove away. That’s how couples who have been married thirty-seven years celebrate anniversaries, at least this couple. She headed to Michigan, to spend time with her 89-year-old mother. Been trying to get her up there every few months, because time flies. Even faster it seems, as I get older.
Passing sixty also seems to have focused my energies on the things I think are most important, which leads to trying to figure out what is most important with the time I have today. Micah 6:8 comes to mind, the verse at the foundation of my heart’s desire for the Journey almost ten years ago. “What does the Lord require, oh man? To seek justice, love mercy and walk humbly with your God.” If it’s important to God, I’m thinking it should be important to me. Justice for all, forgiveness and mercy for all, and our lives pointing to the source of justice, mercy and forgiveness, and not pointing at ourselves.
Does that help you clarify what is important, like it has me? I hope so.
